Block Blast: Block Puzzle Game is developed and published by Hungry Studio, a mobile games developer. The game reached a mass audience in 2023–2024, when it climbed to the top of the free charts on both the App Store and Google Play and became one of the most downloaded puzzle games in the world.
Why it took off
Block Blast did not invent the grid block-puzzle format — games like 1010! and Woodoku came earlier. What it got right was polish and feel: satisfying clear animations, a gentle difficulty ramp, quick sessions, and aggressive-but-tolerable monetisation. It became the reference point for the whole genre, which is why you now see the phrase “games like Block Blast” everywhere.
Is it the same as the wooden block puzzles?
Mechanically, yes — three pieces, an 8×8 grid, clear lines and columns. The wooden-themed versions (Woodoku, Wood Block) add a Sudoku-style 3×3 clear. Block Blast keeps it to rows and columns with a bright, modern look.
Why are there so many similar games?
The core loop is simple, genuinely fun, and not something any one company can own. That means dozens of studios — including ours — build their own version. We made Prism Blast, an original block puzzle with a 500-level campaign, live multiplayer and a neon look. It is a different game by a different studio (Study10x), in the same relaxing genre.
