Block Blast is a block-puzzle game: you drop shapes onto a grid and clear full rows and columns. It takes about ten seconds to learn and a long time to master. This guide covers every rule, the controls on phone and desktop, exactly how scoring works, and the mistakes that end most games early.
The goal
There is no finish line and no timer. Your only goal is to keep scoring for as long as possible by clearing lines, and to avoid filling the board so full that your next set of blocks cannot be placed. The game is effectively endless if you play well.
The board
Block Blast is played on an 8×8 grid — 64 cells, all empty at the start. Some modes and higher levels use a 9×9 grid, but the core rules are identical.
The blocks
You are given three block shapes at a time, shown in a tray below the board. Shapes range from a single cell up to a 3×3 square and five-in-a-row lines, plus L, T, S and Z shapes. You must place all three before you receive three new ones. Blocks cannot be rotated in the standard game — you place them exactly as shown.
How to place a block
- On a phone or tablet: press and hold a block, drag it onto the board, and release. In our web version the block floats just above your fingertip so you can see where it will land.
- On a computer: click and hold a block with the mouse, move it over the board, and release the button.
A valid position highlights in a positive colour; an invalid one (off the edge or overlapping filled cells) highlights red and the block returns to the tray if you drop it.
Clearing lines
When you completely fill any row (8 cells across) or any column (8 cells down), that line instantly clears and those cells become empty again. You can clear a row and a column with the same block, or several rows and columns at once — multi-line clears are worth far more.
How scoring works
Exact numbers vary between versions, but every Block Blast-style game rewards the same things:
- Placing a block: a small number of points, usually one per cell.
- Clearing a line: a flat bonus for each line removed.
- Multi-line clears: clearing two, three or four lines with a single block multiplies the bonus.
- Combos / streaks: clearing at least one line on consecutive placements builds a multiplier that keeps growing until you place a block without clearing anything.
This is why good players do not clear a line the moment they can. They set up two or three near-complete lines and clear them together, then keep the streak alive on the next move.
Why the game ends
The game ends the instant all three blocks in your tray are impossible to place anywhere on the board. It is never random. It means the board filled up faster than you cleared it — usually because a large piece (a 3×3 square or a 5-line) arrived with nowhere to go. Keeping open space is the whole skill.
Boosters (app version)
The Prism Blast app adds optional boosters — a bomb, a single-block hammer, a line clear, a shuffle and an undo — for when you are genuinely stuck. The browser game keeps it pure: three blocks, one board, no lifelines.
